The reason is it only needs to go to parliment if we want to change the present law. But then it still may not get changed anyway. Which makes it a money wasting survey that could have been avoided and the vote gone straight to parliament.

Now that the precedent of governing by optional non-binding opinion polls, are we going to use the process for other legislation? Or is it just another way to beat up on gays and lesbians?

Perhaps we could do away with politicians altogether and have run government by the ABS and facebook.

Interestingly, a friend of mine who was abroad was able to cast her 'vote' electronically. So why couldn't everyone? And if people weren't able or willing to do that then a paper form could be made available at post offices. Would've saved a hell of a lot of money!
