I was there the Xmas just gone. Unfortunately though due to an unhealthy waterpump, I was unable to take the Landy.
We stayed at my parents place in Roseberry (kind of scary little town that one) 8O
All those derelict looking houses that actually are occupied, I think Mum and Dad have about the best looking house in the town.
Anyway it was pretty cool, weatherwise, and rained for all but one day that we were there. Still we had a great time, and the wet weather just gave us an excuse to sit around and eat and drink more.
There are some pretty good looking tracks all along the roads there.
I don't think you'd have to go too far to find some decent 4WDing.
While we were there a guy even rolled his 4WD on the easy part of the Montezuma Falls track (is that the right name?)
SES had to come drag him out.
My old man didn't want to scratch his new Terracan so he wasn't going anywhere beyond a proper dirt road. :roll:
Boat rip was awesome, $1500 and something for two adults three dogs and the vehicle. Both ways from and back to Sydney.

If you travel during the peak season

the ship travels ex Melbourne daily and nightly both ways

10 hour trip one way

I loved the comments about Roseberry! I spent a bit of my childhood growing up in Gormanston - which is smaller and more run down than there


I would definetely be in as Phoenix suggested, and I'm sure that between all of us we could come up with a plan of attack (so to speak) for you guys when you come down. Honestly, there is so much to see and a lot of people that come down usually end up coming back again later to see the stuff they missed.

If you are bringing the Landies down - excellent. Add camper trailers and it will restrict you for some areas, but we can always find someone's house to leave them at if needed :wink:

Give us some dates/time period - and what YOU really want to look at - and we can run some suggestions past you if you'd like!

Tyrepower, the track that you are thinking of is probably the montezuma falls track that starts not far from the hercules haulage.

There is also one down the the manganet mine which is supposed to be an interesting drive, it follows the old tramway down to the mine.

I want to see as much as possible in the 2-3 weeks we will have on the ground without rushing it, as we can always come back and see the more popular tourist type attractions if we flew down and stayed in the major centres.

Primarily more of the out of the way places that require 4wd access and off the tourist path, that said though it has been made blatently obvious that we must stop at the Cadbury's factory or else, so if we're gunna do that then look out Boags and Cascade :wink:

And as Hiline said, a fresh trout or two for dinner after catching it yourself certianly appeals. 8)

I was in Tassie in Jan 05 (drove from Brisbane) and I can assure you that I spent very little time in shorts and t-shirt. It was extremely windy (unusual for the time apparently). We ended up wearing almost the same clothes as we did when snowboarding at Perisher in June the same year. There was some snow on top of Cradle Mountain when we climbed it and it apparently snowed at Great Lake but we didn't go there.

Although it is a fantastic place to visit. We spent 16 days in the State and it was not long enough for my liking. We did a clockwise loop so we didn't see much inland stuff. If you like the convict stuff then Port Arthur is a must. We spent 2 days looking at the historic site but very little time at the mines as we didn't know about them til we went to Port Arthur. I imagine the mines would take another day at least to view.

We plan on moving there for a year or so just for something different.

You will love it. It is totally different from a Qlders idea of what Australia looks like.
