You need to take the measurment from the front of the Bull bar to the end of the trailer when its hooked up to give a total length. Pretty simple really 8O 8O
We spent nearly the whole of March & April '05 (7 weeks) there & the weather was great for most of the time. Some days were very warm (25-30deg). We wore our summer clothes during the day. The nights were cool, but not too cold.Quote:

if i had the bloody van to measure :evil: :evil: :evil:
so when i pick up the new van which is 4.8m in body length
and hooked up to the car,i can them measure it from the FRONT of the BULLBAR to the back of the VAN...........Pretty simple really :?
Yeah sounds simple!!. Yet when I measured mine up I didn't have it hooked up and did not allow for the towball and hitch. Was only over by 20cm and had to pay for the extra metre at the dock in Melbourne :oops: . Lucky they took card.
The site does say to add one metre for a bullbar and another metre for a bike rack. However when I rang them to book they said don't worry about that and just wanted to know how long it was overall. I said exactly 5 metres although it was 5.10 metres. It was $50ish for under 5 and $95ish for over 5 (peak times). They said all cars get measured at the docks (between painted lines on the ground) and if it was over 5 metres I would have to pay the extra on the spot. They never measured my car either on the way or way back (both via Melbourne).
The reason the car is cheap and the trailers are expensive is that cars are subsidised and the trailers are not.
Don't forget to keep your gas bottles in an easy to reach spot too. As they are taken from you before you board and given back when you leave. They get locked in a cage on the back of the worlds rustiest Hilux.
Never got over 25 deg when we were there and it was rare to get that high.
We also met quite a few people who had taken the family car over on the boat while the rest of the family flew over. When it is min $115ish for a non cabin ticket yet you can fly from Melbourne to Hobart from $29 it is a no brainer.
Oh yeah if you take any guns and ammo over you have to advise well prior to leaving. They take these off you at the dock and put them in with the gas bottles on the back of the "Rusty" Hilux. Reason being if there is a fire or any problem on the boat they open the back doors and push the lot into the ocean.
