This is not quoted verbatim but it went something like this. A pension for those who through disability or misfortune were unable to fully provide for themselves in their old age. Now note the use of the words "fully provide". Parliament obviously considered that it was your own responsibility to provide for yourself but for those who fell upon hard times a small pension could be paid to assist.

Decades later the populace have come to consider the Age Pension as a right and their sole support. Recent changes to income and asset tests may be considered unfair by some but it remains a fact that one can be rich in Australia and still get a part pension. We are a very generous nation.

the first Gen that could actually afford housing,, and then after 30 years, retired on the property value,,

Every generation has it's own difficulties. Talk to my grandparents if you want "hard". There was no social security back then. They were lucky to have 3 meals a day and a house to live in.

It is also interesting to compare the generations. My grandparents generation were the builders.. the makers for the future. Everything seems to have been created in there time. Big stuff like snowy hydro, phone systems, power systems.... Not just bit stuff though. They built all the pools, and the public halls, all the playgrounds....

The boomers used all the public halls, all the pools, all the playgrounds ... and ran them into the ground. Every year for the last 20years they have tried to close all the pools, remove the halls ... remvoe the public spaces. It's the generation of greed... sell everything off to your big business mates for whatever you can get out of it... Sell the utilities the previous generation built and paid for... gas, power, water, communication... there parents had scrimped saved and worked there guts out to build all the public assets... the boomers ran them all into the ground and sold off what they could.

I'm not negative towards the baby boomers, it's just what has happened the world over for the last 30+years. I can't see the Gen X's doing anything other than killing off the last of the public assets that the boomers haven't already managed to flog off for what they could get.

Maybe it'll be the Millenials that turn it all around and think big ... and about the future generations rather than themselves (like our grandparents did).

Ummmm. I am a boomer. Born in 1948.Do not fit any of what you say. As a matter of fact, we didn't know we were boomers, didn't even think of it. Just one thought about your post. Do you and your mob vote ? Don't blame those before you for your lack of political responsibility, how many times did you vote responsibly in an election which may have made a difference ? Or didn't you care?

I don't blame anyone ... It's just what has happened. Its a fact. The X'ers sure don't look like they are going to do any better at anything other than getting everything they can for themselves while there is something left to grab either. We will see in the next 20years as they take over from the boomers ( the millenials can blame us for everything then ).

It's all good mate. But can you remember when this bull**** about boomers, millennials etc came about? Once upon a time we were all Australians. What has happened to set us upon ourselves? To make a divide between generations of Australians, is not what Australia was meant to be. In my day , we all helped each other, in your day, it seems division is the norm. We are coming more American than Australian, I think. And that is the fault of those after us.

SWMBO says I can retire at 75. That's nice. There might be a few bent boats about by then.
    Cheers, Billy.
