They offer the flu shot here at work every year, those that get it almost always still get the flu.

Yeah mate, being off mature age and prone to asthma I have a flue shot every year on advice from my GP. I still work part time bus driving so I come into contact with people sneezing and sniffling as they get on the bus, so I take all the precautions that I can. In previous years I have avoided getting the flue.

This year yes, but in prior years the vaccinations stopped upwards of 98% of flu. Interest study showed that about 1000 people who get a water placebo they thought was a flu shot got a flu or the other colds and virus typical during the flu season, The 1000 who got the flu shot during the same study were not protected from the other colds and virus typical during the flu season and some still got the other bits but interestingly again. The Flu Shot group got less of the the other colds and virus typical during the flu season than the water group.

Both groups blamed the Flu shot for the the other colds and virus typical during the flu season

I think if you are young and healthy they arent required, but for babies and the elderly/frail its still a good idea.

I haven't had the flu or even a bad cold for about 40 years. However I had the vaccination this year because my GP told me that I could pass on the flu to others without being sick myself.
As I regularly visit a frail MIL and young grandchildren, I had the shot.
This report from the CDC seems to confirm that my GP was telling the truth.

    • Getting vaccinated yourself also protects people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.
