A concept hard to come to grips with.
In 1973 a "ferrocement" (or concrete) yacht Helsal won the Sydney to Hobart Race.
It didn't know they were still being made.
i was just on whitworths ordering a cattledog, at the bottom of the
fill out section it asks what are the types of your boat??
power/sail, length and construction.
well the last one is <span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%">CEMENT</span> 8O

Yeah my mate had a concrete yacht, I said the same thing
it would take a great deal of "faith" to sail in one---
I've seen lots of cement house stumps that have cracked from the inside out due to rust,,,

Is that like asbestos, or fibro cement?
Very popular with DIYers back in the 60's. basic hull was very cheap and quick to build. Usually 1/2" rod with 8 to 12 layers of chicken wire for reinforcing...then you called in a team of concreters and next day you've got a hull. Trap a good few people got into was you could build a basic 60' hull in concrete for less than a traditional 30' hull, so they did....then realised that it cost about 20 times as much to finnish off...so they never did
Yeah used to get a fair few up around Hervey Bay when i was a boy. They handle rough seas better than a lot of other types (of similar shape) due to the extra weight. Biggest problem is the reo rod starts to rust and expand and crack the cement. You can't use gal rod either, i think it was something to do with the cement not sticking to it or some such.
Real boats are made of wood in my opinion![]()
