Non-Landy most-hated cars

I think the worst car that I ever drove was a Gemini renter.

Funny, I have had some **** cars in my time but I never hated them.

I had a HA Viva which took me from Brisbane to Adelaide and back with only one hiccup of the oil filter pushing it's gasket out on a cold morning near Hay. As I had spare oil it only took a few minutes to fix. It took me out to Charleville and Cunnamulla when it was dirt , broke a screen near St George and seeing we were broke drove back to Brisbane in pouring rain with no screen.

I had a Honda Scamp N600G which would touch 150Kmh down a hill and scare the beejesus out of passengers, although the mains and bigends rattled like buggery at idle.
Many would say these are **** cars but I remember the good times in them.

I guess the car that left me coldest was a TC Cortina 250. I had a Cortina Mk2GT which handled so well but the 250 was like a barge in comparison, and boiled its transmission fluid after one hot run at 160 plus to Toowoomba . but I got it cheap as a Ford employee and sold it for a profit so what is not to like.
The car that cost me the most was a Hillman Imp GT that went like buggery when it was going with a few mods but AFAIR way back cost me about 5k in repairs and modifications way back in 1969. I did rev it to 10grand though and bored and sleeved it to 1025 CC. It would beat a Cooper S.
Boy was I young and stupid then.

Must say i have owned many a cheap car classed as bombs by previous owners in the past[bighmmm]
But to be honest i enjoyed them all for totally different reasons [smilebigeye]
I enjoyed the learning curve and the challenge to get any where .
The only one that caused me stress was a EK Holden that did a timing gear half way from Melb to Albury on the back road .
That car got a new alloy timing gear fitted on the side of the Melba Hwy that took 3 days to do with limited tools but we got home not to our intended destination [thumbsupbig]

Worst car ever would be our EB Ford Falcon wagon, from day one it gave us trouble, we had to take it back to the dealer (Fury Ford) the very next day and from that day on it was in the dealer every month till we eventually sold it A BLOODY TERRIBLE CAR, as for Ford:soapbox:

Had forgotten all about these. Had a few in the company and all were a problem. Could not take off from a standing start with the air on - would stall after about half a car length. Exciting when you are part way across the road with traffic bearing down.

Also had one do a roll on the highway near Caboolture it went right over and landed back on its wheels on the other side of the road facing the on coming traffic. Luck they had landed in a gap in the traffic so no one seriously hurt. Another of our cars was coming down the road and ended up facing the car that had just rolled. If only there was dash cam back then .......

Nan had an EB wagon for years. Very low maintenance/high miles and with the exception of the obligatory coil hassles, it was great. I had an EB Ghia sedan at the same time with no issues (not even the dreaded Smartlock).

Had a Peugeot 5008 for about 6 weeks. Was fitted with the DSG gearbox and diesel which should be a good combination. If you left it in drive in jerked, shuddered and kangarooed through each gear. Had to use the gear change paddles behind the steering wheel. Practice found you had to push it to the top of the rev range then lift off the accelerator change gear the reapply accelerator. Dealer could not find any fault this is how they all are.

Oh and the designers had never heard of something called a corner. It was never keen to change direction and fought you all the way when you forced it to do so.

Four cylinder Torana with auto trans and Mk1 Escort with the 1300 engine and auto would not climb the ramp onto the top deck of a car carrier without warming up and using all the space in the yard for a flying start. If the loader did not have sufficient momentum the things would converter stall halfway up. One driver once said to me "those things wouldn't pull a greasy stick out of a dog's bum." The 1300 auto Escorts would just do 70 mph and no more. I never tried a little Torana out for top speed. I suspect they would have been much the same.

Dad had Zephyr for a while and it was OK.
I once drove a Lada Niva and the only good thing about it was it was so short I could wipe the inside of the rear window without leaving the driver's seat.
We had a yellow Holden Kingswood wagon for a while and it was the crudest, ugliest beast you can imagine. Only good thing was it was huge inside.

Not cars I have owned and hated but relevant. 1960's I decided I would like to try some clean non-physical work in lieu of being a greasy fitter or long haul driver. I got a job as a trainee salesman with one of Brisbane's bigger used car organisations that had six yards. The manager of the yard I started at was running me through the do's and don'ts. He said to never promise a head a trade in value. Ask him what they wanted and then see the sales manager and he will tell you the book price and how much of the fat in the deal can be used to load the trade. He said that if I wanted to continue working there to avoid trading in "Fiats, Renaults, Skodas, Singers, and such rubbish". Talk the head into a no trade deal or convince him that the opposition liked those cars and could give him a much better deal than we could.

In the heavy truck game almost nobody wanted to trade in old MAN's, Deutz, Berliet, heavy end of the Leyland range.

A year 2000 model Daewoo Lanos gets my vote for a terrible car. Bought it brand new because it was cheap and I got what I paid for. Absolutely gutless and downright dangerous on the highway. Drove it to Brisbane a couple of times to visit my daughter and it was that gutless that when I got the opportunity to overtake a truck at the start of double lanes, I had to wait and let the traffic behind me pass first, otherwise I was holding them up. Wifey hated it................so did I.:rocket:


ps. Not only was it gutless but it had the following problems.......

1) Replaced the muffler because it rusted out............THREE TIMES.
2) Replaced the alternator when the original one failed.
3) Replaced the front wheel bearings.
4)Replaced a broken gear linkage when the original one broke leaving my wife stranded, because she could not get it to go into gear.

All this on a car we owned for 6 years or thereabouts with only 70,000k's on it when we sold it.
