i have no other options , except a Triton , will be a basic shirt box , it will be fine if he likes simple , there will be no comforts or extras . It will have powered newfangled winda’s .

Buy a Delica.

Still, my BIL, who lives in Tokyo, has brought in a fancy version, I guess it's a cross between a Tarago and a HiAce. It is a fully fledged, Toyota built camper. It is 4WD. I hate it. He loves it. He plans to retire home soonish, and it will be his family's hone while he surfs.

Hmm I must be a old fart too. I don`t like electric windows or central locking in a 4wd either. In fact I like a 4wd that you can remove the battery whilst it is running and it won`t stop.

I have. The same people ( I think, Hilliers ) made a stunning Coupé as well. Ford were never good at taking hints.

What about a Defender, either a 120 with tray (a bit rare) or a 130 Double Cab & Tray [smilebigeye] in either 300TDI or TD5 should be able to get one around his budget,manual windows,key lock/unlock discs up front and some with disc rear.

What can a Delica tow? Needs to be able to tow either a small boat or a medium sized caravan.

Yes , I think so .
but as they are an import it’s hard to get the ‘rating’ or a solid spec . They are like a early Pajero driveline / chassis .

my sister really wants one , so my dad and her have been researching them . An old neighbour of mine had one and it certainly towed stuff fine - caravan , car trailers with approx 1220kg weight .

Having worked on and driven a few Delicas they're basically a hybrid related to both the Pajero and the Triton using either a 3.0 V6 or a 2.8 Tdi. Certainly they have the grunt to tow reasonable loads although the petrol version drinks like a fish. Quite a comfortable thing to drive for a medium sized 4WD van. I like the fact that the engine is out the front under a proper bonnet not jammed between the seats like in the L300.
