Manual of seamanship is still my knot bibleYou can often find one at second hand book shops.
Seen more than a few well knotted disasters. The knots were ok the crap rope was not suitable for a dog lead is often the issue. Loads of the ropes sold at bunnings are complete rubbish.
I once worked for a builder in Sydney. Another labourer loaded and tied down a load of scaffolding onto the tipper. He used ropes and a double truckers knot to secure it. Worked so well that when the tipper bed and the chassis separated the load was still intact. Pity about the old Daihatsu.
I got in the habit of using a cargo net from the boat...
Rods etc in the boat are considered an unsecured load.... unless the net is on.
I always have an insurance policy. Typically long straps and the tail tied off around the load also (Plus extra straps...im anal about loads and can honestly say I drove the Tele track and Cape York and if any of the roof load moved a cm (rod holder, spare fuel, big instant up travel tent, recovery tracks etc) I didn't notice. Cheers
