So I called Telstra on my mobile - which has very dicey cover here. Repeatedly went through their voice recognition system to eventually get to a human - invariably in the wrong department. Transfers were either impossible or the mobile dropped out, so I had to go through the whole rigmarole three or four times before finding out that it was not just my line but the whole area, should be back by 1900 tomorrow. "You can get more information from our website". So I went to their website (satellite internet). Seems you can't find out anything about outages without inputting your address. And the system did not accept my address.

So back on the mobile, wondering if Telstra have screwed up my address again. Same rigmarole, and eventually established that no, they have my address right, and it doesn't work for them either. Seems no further information available.

Later in the day, after repeatedly trying to phone a relative in the local village on his mobile, I began to suspect that there is an issue with the tower as well. So I tried to look at that on their outages website, and that doesn't work either! Another phone call to Telstra. This time I ended up talking to their NBN area (I had asked for mobile faults!). But he was not only understandable, but was helpful, and confirmed that the website did not work for him either, then called mobile faults, and confirmed there was an issue with the tower, although it was unclear exactly what was the issue.

I strongly suspect that since the tower is connected to the same exchange that my phone is on, there has perhaps been an issue with someone with a backhoe!
John, when using the telstra robot telephonist, saying "complaint complaint complaint' will get you straight to an operator.
And if you have spoken to them three times about an issue that is still not resolved to your satisfaction, you are entitled to make a complaint to the TIO
You may already know this stuff.

How many backyards have a power pole in them? Usually there're on the footpath.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

In Canberra, where power is above ground, the power poles and wires run along the back fence lines/boundaries - there are no poles on the streets.

I must have been lucky. I moved from Sydney to the south coast 4 months back. Around 2 months before I moved I started dialogue with Telstra re moving. They organised all necessary action and provided me with my new number. Two weeks before I moved I was contacted and told the date of connection of new service and the date and time the NBN tech would arrive to set up connection. This date was the day we were to move so I reorganised for the following day. The next day the tech arrived right on the allotted time. I had already set up the NBN box and phone connections. He took one look and I told him I was an ex Tech officer with Telstra and my end was ok. He drove up the street and 5 minutes later all was working. No problems since either.

In similar circumstances twenty-five years ago I was able to get the phone installed way out in the bush, in a caravan we used while building the house, on time, without my being there, even though it involved 9km of new cable. And it cost $50 from memory.

That sort of thing used to be normal, but seems to be almost impossible to achieve today.

    That's Canberra!!

You do have to go looking for the servo's.

There is one two doors away atm as I enjoy my morning latte and smashed avo with a fried egg on toast, but you need to be a local to find most of them!

    One of those Telstra days!

Our Telstra phone line has so much noise it is impossible to hear a conversation but the offshore Telstra support people say it’s ok! We’ve tried countless times over 6 months trying to get someone out but because it apparently works their end no one actually comes. We’ve gone over to using mobile phones instead. Same with Aussie Broadband, you just can’t get a technician out when something isn’t working and you can’t cut wires etc because it belongs to Telstra etc and if you still can’t get it to work and a technician eventually turns up they’ll claim it’s been tampered.
