Inc, why is there a 3 month wait?

You can choose a provider just like your phone and computer.....I guess you probably know that , but they do differ a lot in what they offer.

I've had them for many years now and only recently since I changed providers did they set the aids up properly to suit me.

I wasn't wearing them very often before because they were a pain in the arse...errrr....ears , now I wear them often and sometimes forget to take them out/off when I go for a swim or a shower.....I always remember at the last moment. A tight t-shirt will sometimes involuntarily remove them too.

the same gear elsewhere is $5k plus by all accounts....

can't wait to hear a lot of things i havent heard in a long long time...

I had serious trouble with the over the ear type that I first had, as I sweat heavily from my head. The aids themselves are waterproof, but the battery compartment is not, and the aids would turn off. This was really problematic in Thailand in April! I now have in the ear type aids, which are nowhere near as good or comfortable. When I can afford them I'll go back to the other type, but rechargeable, to do away with the battery door.

John, when you say "back to other type", do you mean over the ear?
I'm in the same boat as many here (old age/industrial deafness/wife who mumbles and talks too quietly).
I hear many horror stories of aids not working well/as promised, which in turn has been a good reason to do nothing, but that's fast becoming a non option.

I persuaded my Dad to finally make an appointment when I was back in the UK at Christmas. Yes, it was irritating for us having the TV up too loud and having to raise our voices constantly but we were concerned about his quality of life having seen my Grandad withdraw from the social life of the family because he simply couldn't take part in our conversations. Dad has hated the fact that they are visible but really they are hardly noticeable at all even though they aren't the in-ear ones.

Very interesting thing the specialist told us at the consultation was that the brain tries to compensate for what it realises is missing in terms of frequencies etc and that that is mentally draining for the sufferer. I'll be back there in a few months so I'm hoping it makes a difference. Specialist also told him to go and make a list of the important 'sounds' to him - types of music, phone calls, conversations - and the types of environment that would be in, in order to recommend the right system. He's actually quite techy and liked the idea of ones he could 'tune' with his phone.

Being a recent convert i have the opinion if you think you may need them you have needed them for a long while .

Sooner you get them sooner you can train your brain they don`t just work you have to learn to use them and you need to persist .

You have to keep going back for adjustments as your brain develops an understanding of what is happening

You`ll hear noises you need and noises you don`t and some noises you want you still can`t have it`s not a 100% fix but it is better than you have .

I used to swear very often prior tasks are less of a problem than they used to be because my brain has started to coast instead of running in overdrive all the time .

It may seem strange but i noticed prior that i was knocking things and misjudging distances just normal every day things not things thought about automatic stuff , that has stopped and i think it is my brain that has been affected .

Again may sound strange but i think my brain was putting too much effort into trying to compensate for my hearing .

When my FIL got his cochlear implants they told him they couldn't turn on all the frequencies at once or his brain would go crazy from trying to decipher all the unfamiliar sounds. Instead he had to go back repeatedly over a year and each time they activated more frequencies.
