It hasn't cost us a cracker in maintenance other than regular services and tyres in over 250k of use.
We have had 3x Hilux utes and 2x 4Runners over the years and the only "Lemon" was one of the 4Runners a 1996 auto which was a POS that was forever breaking down But the utes have lived up to the "Unbreakable" reputation for us so far.
However as the D2a is by far a much more comfortable and capable truck and a delight to drive compared to the twin cab Hilux and I have No doubts whatsoever that IF Landrover had optioned All their discoveries with a Twin cab model we would have bought one instead of the Hilux.
Landrover missed the boat by Not offering twin cab disco's as far as I am concerned.
They may be reliable, but Colmoore also mentioned "rollover". They aren't called Rolluxes for nothing.

There is a firm here in Murchison who make dual cab utes from 200 series Toyos etc, have not seen a Disco yet. He extends the chassis and they look the real deal

Defender passed the moose test with flying colours. HiLux didn't. Even 9 years after failing before. Has to tell you something.

Since the monocoque body of the disco is considered integral with the ladder frame chassis, i wonder if that might complicate matters for conversions?

Do you have a link to a Defender being tested?

Unfortunately, no. It was mentioned in one of the vids I looked at, and I cannot say which Defender was tested.

I should also add, in Toyota's defence, that the HiLux has been modded, and the results are impressive. I wonder if they will recall all the ones that failed. Not holding my breath.

I googled defender moose/elk test recently, and just then again, and all links say it failed at a low speed?

The rear suspension of a D3 is light years ahead of cart springs, being independent with airbags, which would be the biggest advance it would have over competitors even now. It would have been the future arriving early. Considering the very recent advances in the DC segment, i suspect it wont be long before proper suspension becomes available on dual cabs.
