Sorry for the late response. I do know your background and don't question your credibility.
However the best Steam Turbine Generator I could find was 37% efficient: Chemical energy in/Electrical energy out.
I know there are Turbines that are as Much as 99% efficient but that rating starts where the stem enters the Turbine.
A modern Internal Combustion Engine is typically 35% efficient, and I have heard (purely anecdotally) that is about to increase to 45%.
Please enlighten me if I'm wrong. It's a long time since I was in the game as you know.

Gas turbines seem to have achieved greater efficiency.

Latest generation gas turbine engines has achieved an efficiency of 46% in simple cycle and 61% when used in combined cycle.<sup>[8]

Yes they are different, but both similar in the way they operate. A gas turbine is physically smaller for the same power output and dosent have the need for boilers to create steam. In saying that many baseload gas power stations will have heat recovery from the gas turbine exhaust to run boilers to power steam turbines as well (combined cycle)

Why have electric cars at all with all the pollution that the old dead batteries would eventually produce?
Why not Hydrogen powered cars?
Use solar power to crack the hydrogen from water, Then burn the hydrogen in cars which will then produce water and No need for heavy batteries and lengthy recharges also the resource is renewed.
People have looked at doing this But none of them have had the backing that the battery car mob has.
Using Hydrogen as a fuel makes absolute sense as 2/3 of the world is covered in the base ingredient and as it is used it is also renewed, That's a Win Win situation [thumbsupbig]
