Obviously there will be hybrids for specific applications - that makes sense. A hybrid in say an all terrain 4wd being the equivalent of a long range tank.

Just when we convinced idiots with generators spoiling the serenity of the bush camp with that horrible 70dba noise to go to solar panels ,

..... In comes the Electric 4x4 set, now we got to put up with that 'horrible generator noise again , or worse a gaggle of high pitched turbine generators !!

maybe if doing a 4x4 trip along the powerlines, just run an inductive loop around the camp and charge batteries on the quiet .

No "maybe" about it (that turning off location services "maybe" isnt enough to stop your phone being tracked)....

There are shopping centres that base shop rents on shop position relative to the most travelled areas of the mall. There are specialist companies who can work out what are the most travelled areas using lots of technologies. Of interest in this context is one I recently looked at - they don't need location services on, just wifi. Your phone wifi constantly seeks out hotspots when it is on, and can give a representation of signal strength to you. Guess what... with lots of hotspots deployed in the mall and smart software you can be triangulated to sub metre accuracy as you walk through a mall.

All this without you actually connecting to any of those hotspots. And location services off. Just by being in range of as little as three appropriately positioned hotspots you are "identified" (by your phone's wifi adapter MAC address) and "located".

DPF's the end of diesel cars in cities?

Amazing no one else has worked out the most fool proof way of not being tracked on your mobile - It’s really simple and I use this technique a lot on the weekends as many of my friends can testify. I turn off my mobile and leave it on the table at home when I go out. Track that Google... DPF's the end of diesel cars in cities?DPF's the end of diesel cars in cities?

I expect servos will have battery charging stations. You will drive in, slide thaflat battery tray out if your EV, take it to the station and swap with a charged battery, slide it into your car and drive away, while the flat battery recharges. It will work like gas bottle swapping.
As for the source of that power, SA is already up to 50% renewables and aiming for 75% and other states will follow. Coal stations are wearing out and closing.

There is a huge difference between a 9kg gas bottle and an expensive battery pack.
A gas bottle is inexpensive and is good for at least 10 years and you always get your 9kg of gas, A battery pack is expensive and as it gets older it can hold less power so if you drop off a new pack that is working to full capacity and get a ratty old one as an exchange with less capacity it doesn't sound as attractive as the gas swap overs.

DPF's the end of diesel cars in cities?

This ideas been around for years and there were facilities to do this in several locations in Europe - can’t remember where though. Drive in, robot changes out the battery pack in 3 minutes and drive out. Was a flop due to the cost of the facilities build and maintenance costs but concept has been proven. I too am not sure if I’d want to risk an older pack as a change over if I was about to try a 300 or 400 KM leg in the car and knowing you’d need every amp to get you there.

I don’t think we are yet looking at a solution that will be what we are used to in 10 or 15 years though, a lot of water to go under the bridge yet and I’m sure someone will find a workable solution - in reality we’ll have to adapt to what that is and be happy with it because us crusty old farts sitting here **** canning it certainly won’t make the OEM’s do a backflip on what is heading our way.
