No “simple” vehicle can meet current requirements for emissions and safety...
Was thinking about a new landy , but have decided to keep my 2007 RRS untill it goes tits up and then look for the simplest cheapest new vehicle i can find which will take me shopping and tow my 13ft caravan .
looking at the new breed of vehicles they are just getting far too complicated and expensive in price and maintenance to buy and run , getting to the stage where soon you will not be able to do anything due to the secret mapping and software , bugger it i say ,they are manufacturing themselve into oblivian .
Here,s hoping an Australian Company ( ie Oka or similar ) can fill the void and come up with a simple robust mechanical type deisel or petrol to suit our country instead of the Late set, if they dont the chinese will , but i dont think that will happen . Its a worry .![]()

Forget Oka! Since they moved offshore, they're more interested in staying out of jail than building vehicles. And they lost the plot before they moved, anyway.
Your best bet, is to get a good Td5, either Disco or Deefer, and put a few grand into rebuilding it. Gives you a low-spec, comfortable vehicle with decent towing capabilities, and, if you do most of the work yourself, you'll be able to maintain it yourself.

I think keeping the RRS is a great idea,,
think about what has actually improved since 2007,,
not the interior,, nots its exterior styling, I doubt the new ones are any more comfortable,,
and the LR Colour Palette has gone All Down Hill since yours....![]()

There are a few others in the same boat.
I am as well, need something new, nothing LR has is what i want.Hanging around for this new Defender is not on the list.
Plan B is to keep the D4 a bit longer.
I was a fool, should have bought one of the last of them.
Only new to my td5 but thinking about this lately that when the time comes and the heart fails what to do and do I want to spend 40+k on a new 4x4 or rebuild the d2
Atm I’m thinking I’d rather spend 40k on d2 hahaha better the devil you know
Yeah it’s difficult and one of the reasons I got rid of the D4 and bought a Defender.
I wasn’t too far behind you Paul and if I hadn’t got the Defender I’d be in the same boat. I was in at a dealers a couple of weeks ago picking up another Defender with a friend and there was nothing on the floor that interested me.
I know they’re not to everybodies taste but I’m so glad I got the Defender. I feel I now have a vehicle I can setup how I want and which will see me through to the other side. Only problem now is I’ve had to buy something else to keep the mileage down.
If I still had the D4 I think I’d just be hanging on for the new Defender.
Cheers,
Jon
Looks like Germany will start to ban older than euro 4 diesels from their citys by the end of April with Euro 5 in Sept 2019 over NOx issues after the go ahead from the courts , another thing to think about when buying new now , how long before these rules start to apear in Oz .
Maybe the Landrover Electric vehicle might come sooner than we think !! .
I’m hanging out for the new Defender, and am praying that it won’t be a disappointment... Fingers crossed..
