I recall the first time I crossed the Gilbert. Westbound in a triple roadtrain, after passing dozens of Narrow Causeway and Road Subject To Flooding signs in the previous 100 k, with no flooding and 12 metres width between the guideposts, it was hard to take the the signage seriously. I crested the dogleg approach at 90ish kph and was shocked to see 100 metres of high kerbed causeway, above the dry creek bed.

So apart from you fellows who never drive faster than 40 kph, it could have happened to any one of you.
You are assuming that we all drive like old mate in the Hilux does, Hopefully that is Not the case.

I've just watched that 3x; now, someone told me there is a 500+ HP td5 somewhere. I'll just sort the 130 and have a go this winter......

    To clarify some details.

The incident appears to be on Heales Rd where is crosses Splitters Creek. Heales Road is about 5 kms long and has what is basically a left turn over a tramline at a T-junction about half way along. So not too much of an opportunity to get wound up and complacent.

At a guess, about 4.5 kms of it is narrow bitumen and requires vehicles to drop their LHS tyres onto the dirt to pass. I don't recall seeing any posted speed limit signs along the road.

As it happens, the wide part of the bitumen is the lead up to the bridge but this is only a few hundred mts long. Lots of warning sign about the bridge.

I would imagine the small sign that is folded up is a "water over road" sign and was being displayed ATT.

The depth indicators show upto 4 mts so it is a hell off a dip down to the low level bridge.

The crossing is well known to locals and needs to be respected even when it is dry but I believe the poor chap was from NSW.
