We're tenants in a newly built house. At every edge of the carpet you can feel the carpet spikes sticking up through the carpet. Along one 3m wall alone my 9 year old counted 16 spikes he could easily feel with his bare feet. Even our not-yet-two-year old has learnt to say, "ow, spike" as he goes up the stairs or crosses from a carpeted area to a non-carpeted area.
The builder arranged for the carpet layer to come back and look at the situation. His verdict. Nothing can be done.
We've lived in more than a few carpeted houses and have never noticed spikes before. This isn't normal is it?

Landlord is responsible for fixing.
Other than that go around the edges with a hammer flattening all the spikes.
Rather than hitting the nails, rub a hammer on the carpet along the wall. This will fold the nails over while still holding the carpet tight.

Cheap and nasty thin carpet i am guessing?
That stuff is the 'smoothedge' that holds the carpet. If you can feel it, the carpet must be very thin and cheap. Scarry is right.
Don.
Hi,
Tap them over with a hammer and a cold chisel, no damage done that can be seen.
Cheers
I was in the flooring trade. The spikes you call then is the "smoothedge" it is timber battens with pins sticking out of them, the carpet edges are stretched over them, this is what holds the carpet tight and gives a neat finish along the walls. Thin cheap and nasty carpets will allow the spikes as you call them to be more prominent. The easy fix is as suggested, run a hammer on its side and rub it across the areas of concern, it will bend the pins down enough to stop your problem.
