A landline is like a mobile phone but has a wire attached to it that plugs into the wall, one can also get a nifty device for it called an answering machine, which is a box that records voicemails the really old ones did it on "cassette tapes" the newer ones on "Micro cassette tapes" and the latest ones on a microchip, the answering machine is often combined with a "facsimile" or "fax" machine, which can be thought of as a device for receiving documents over a landline. I just let the answering machine take the call, as being a bit of a reclusive hermit myself, I feel no compulsion to answer telephones or even the front door! I also don't answer the mobile unless I recognise the number and I want to talk to the person at that particular time.

Only to say iOS devices receive regular security and OS updates out to about 5 years at which time whatever the latest OS version was available at the time of obsolescence is still available. I recently "upgraded" a 9 year old iPad from whatever was on it to whatever was the latest version of iOS at the time (9 from memory). Still available for download and Apple is still signing it.

Can't comment on Android based units as I only have an old tablet which never sees an outside network for specific single task, so still as the version it was supplied with in 2013.

If you buy an iDevice new, you'll get several updates a year for a number of years should you choose to avail yourself of them. If you are not getting updates, there's a problem but it's not representative of the iOS "ecosystem".

The 2019 Macbook I have was a demo and for some reason is not registered to me, and I suppose my apple id. It has been saying no updates available since I've had it. Came from an Apple reseller / tech place not that away.

Would like to install the os after High Sierra.

Surely the telstra store that 1950's missus came from should be able to sort out updates?

Frankly I don't trust a Telstra store to sort out a Telstra SIM card, let alone a Mac.

High Sierra has been out of support for a year or so (I have it on my 2011 iMac but rarely boot into it). If it's a 2019 Mac an upgrade "should" be relatively easy but since they moved to the "App store" style of upgrade there might well be an issue with your AppleID problem.

I have two MacBooks - one a 13" from a few years ago now, and I recently bought a new 16". When I went to update files etc from the old to the new, the IOS forced a system update on the older computer as the file transfers will not work unless BOTH are running the latest IOS. So now the old one which was running High Sierra is updated to Big Sur, same as the new one. Both working well, except the battery in the old one is dead and I can only use it if plugged into external power source.

New message just now giving me the option to opt out of not receiving messages

Most people who bother me are trying to get something from me....most really have nothing to offer.

This week I was getting calls on the mobile from a number beginning in 0480....so I decided to block it, only to have another number beginning in 0480... start calling. Not sure if the scammers have the tech to know their number has been blocked, or just rotate through different ones as I see there are three 0480 numbers in my phone's history?

I keep getting text messages telling me I have a missed call message & to load an app to listen to it , every time I block it another comes through with a number one digit away from the one I have blocked & there are no missed calls showing in my phone call list. The one last night made out it was from Vodaphone. Have had 4 since mid night last night. Scum bags . I bet the police are over run with people reporting these scams .

So, why can't Telstra et al track or disconnect these numbers?
