A landline is like a mobile phone but has a wire attached to it that plugs into the wall, one can also get a nifty device for it called an answering machine, which is a box that records voicemails the really old ones did it on "cassette tapes" the newer ones on "Micro cassette tapes" and the latest ones on a microchip, the answering machine is often combined with a "facsimile" or "fax" machine, which can be thought of as a device for receiving documents over a landline. This old technology is not to be sniffed at as Howard Hughes ran a multi-million dollar empire from a hotel room using just a telephone and a fax machine.
I just let the answering machine take the call, as being a bit of a reclusive hermit myself, I feel no compulsion to answer telephones or even the front door! I also don't answer the mobile unless I recognise the number and I want to talk to the person at that particular time.
