I think - he originally proved that black holes could not exist - then proved why they do!
He attributes his condition to his success because it forced him to use his mind.  Read a few different books about him.  One of his fellow researchers said that their could be a chalk board covered from top to bottom with mathamatical equations and he would get a phone call during the night from Prof Hawkings explaining where the mistake is - this of course was from memory.
A brief history of time is one of the best selling book - but is the book most likely not to be finished!
I was told that A brief history in time has been written twice - as the first edition was written for physcists but most physcists could not understand it!
My brothers step son actually served him beer while working at a pub in England (along with Rowan Atkinson)!
