That's all I've ever used too, particularly pulling utes and tractors out of black soil way back on the farm.
Or the winch.
Snatch straps scare the **** out of me!
I have a long handled shovel mounted on the D2 and I'll be picking up my old Tirfor soon so I'll be getting fit if I get stuck, I don't want to mount a winch on the D2.
I prefer to do a tow recovery with a snatch strap rather than a chain. A strap is much lighter and easier to carry in the car and to work with, and is cheaper. It absorbs minor shock loads, which often happen no matter how careful you are, unless the recovery vehicle is an auto and the bogged vehicle is undriven. During a tow it stores so little energy and is so far within its strength capabilities you dont have to worry about any breakage related risks.
Incredible lack of basic risk aversion.. Cheers
Hi,
I think you are right there. The shots of the rear of the tow vehicle certainly look like a snatch strap on closer inspection.
Cheers
I'm fairly sure the driver wasn't killed in that one, but did have his jaw smashed up pretty badly. That's why I am always paranoid using straps, because even a near miss will make a mess of you.
I thought it looked like a length of chain on the back of the tug (a couple of metres, maybe) then a strap.
You're right though, a chain won't recoil like that, without something very springy attached to it.
