They are called tow points for a reason.
I doubt that anyone is saying that a tow point is to be used as a snatch point.
Using a tow point for a towing or winching exercise is in my opinion Not a problem because the forces involved are Nowhere near as severe as a snatch recovery and these points should NEVER be used as a snatch point.
Sorry tombie But what I have said is NOT "Rubbish" regarding NOT needing special "Rated" recovery points on a D1or D2 to enable a winch recovery because the factory fitted tow point is just fine IF you need to use a double pull with a winch fitted.
I never saw the factory point as a tow point ...more a tie down point for a slide tray.
One of my first changes was to install 2 x 4x4 Intelligence heavy duty recovery points with high tensile bolts and a bridle. Never been towed using them but flat bed towies love them.
Cheers
I would have to agree with Tobie tow points are designed for towing a vehicle on flat level ground or on to the back of a tilt tray truck not pulling a vehicle out of a bog that's a recovery hence the need for recovery points.
From my days doing physics and pure & applied maths : Force = Mass x Acceleration (F=MA).
The mass of the bogged vehicle is constant.
If you just drag or winch it out there is very little acceleration involved so there is not a lot of force involved, just enough to overcome the resistance of the bog.
If you use something that creates movement suddenly then there is the attempted acceleration of the mass which increases the force involved very substantially.
I doubt there is any manufacturer in the world that would even suggest where rated recovery points should be placed if they are to be used for snatch recoveries.
Aren't those recoveries something to do with getting back with your ex-wife anyway?

The way I read 176 and 177 is that Landover call them recovery points as in recovering a broken down cars to put on a trailer but to each there own as I have said before if the car doesn't have rated recovery points I personally would not be towing that car under any circumstances.
No Landrover call them "Towing Eyes"
Quote:
The towing eyes at the front and rear of the
vehicle are designed for on-road vehicle
recovery purposes only and must NOT be used
to tow a trailer or caravan.
Front
A single towing eye, set behind a removable
panel in the front spoiler is provided at the front
of the vehicle for on-road recovery. DO NOT use
the front lashing rings for towing purposes.
Before driving off-road, remove the panel from
the spoiler as a precaution against accidental
loss.
Rear
A pair of towing eyes are provided at the rear of
the vehicle. These can be used as lashing rings
and for towing your vehicle.
