Another snatch strap death

Terrible :(

I'm pretty sure I have a video somewhere still (that I took from a distance years ago) of someone snatching someone else out of a big using a CHAIN!! Holy hell, I didn't know then what I know now but I still knew that was a horribly dangerous thing to do.

I guess a proper cargo barrier would at least stop something coming through the car from back to front if a snatch point failed, doesn't help much if it comes at a front windscreen though. Funny, in all the snatch lessons and warnings I don't think I've ever seen anything about a cargo barrier mentioned as a bit of added safety from the rear.

Given the amount of fatalities that occur from the "misuse" of snatch straps, it makes you wonder how many near misses there are.

Makes me wonder if my recovery points on the D1 are okay if I ever need to use them. It's a proper bar on the front with what I assume are rated recovery points...but the car is now 20 years old and probably so is the bar and those points. Does anyone ever get recovery points tested to make sure they're still up to scratch?

Tas Fire Service used to teach that raising the bonnet will offer some protection from the front if applicable to the recovery.

I would think that education/training on the safe use of snatch straps would go a long way to help minimise these accidents.
Far too many people that use a snatch strap have absolutely No idea what they are doing.
Also too many people go for the snatch strap as their first choice in a recovery when something as simple as just lowering the tyre pressures will do the job.
Personally I would only use a snatch strap as a very last resort.

i agree but how are you going to enforce this education? people wont do it unless forced.

I can't see any way that the correct way of using a snatch strap can be "enforced".
However well thought out you tube video's like this are useful.
