Sorry, but that's rubbish. Toyota can export from anywhere, but they have now chosen not to do so from here. Ford and GM ( forget Holden ) could have exported from here, but why on earth would they, when they could export from places where they could make a profit? They both had absolutely massive problems with their deals ( think lifetime medical for all family members of anyone whoever who worked on a line in Detroit, and the cost that imposed ) with unions to even think of continuing here. They needed to improve (!) their bottom line. Who needs the strife? Ford, for one, know the value of Australian involvement, which is why all their Pacific cars are developed here. And all their sub continent cars. They merely build them where it is economic to do so. Currently, this happens to be in Thailand. Good. For too long have we exploited the poor in countries like that. The Ford Ranger, Everest, Focus lines are brilliant cars, built better than any Falcon or Commodore ever was, and Thais get to join the first world in a way they never had before. What can be wrong with that? Unless, of course, there is some sympathy for the pathetic union movement that I have missed. The AMWU made their bed. Let them lie in it. They won't, of course. The new mega union will be their friend. And we are stuffed. Best go to Thailand if you want a job in the auto industry. Be warned though: those buggers know how to work. And they build MUCH better cars.
I pine for the GTHO, but I'm aware that I must move on. The world has changed.
