If those VWs don't meet our air pollution laws, I doubt if they could be legally sold here unless they were fixed to comply with the emissions tests.
Still an awful waste of energy and materials if they are scrapped. Would the effects of scrapping be more or less polluting than if they were allowed on the road for what would be the expected lifetime ?
Or VW could fix their software so they do meet the emissions rules.
When Rover went bust and there were airfields full of new cars. I sold a lot to African countries where an importer would take a bulk order and then sell into local market. Lack of manufacturer support did not concern them. As there are many African countries without an official importer this may be an option. Most of these countries have rules around age of used imports however the impacted cars would be new enough to pass. Most of them follow the EU pollution rules which are not as stringent as the USA rules so the software up date would be OK for their markets.
Theres a reason VW build in Mexico( 350K a year),,
cheap freight into usa,, amoungst other reasons,,
I doubt anyone would buy one if you had to add-on boat freight costs...
I heard on the radio this morning there are changes afoot. They may be able to sell them into the American market soon.
Are they all diesels, i didn't think the yanks would be big on compact cars with oil burners ?
Trumps gunna change the pollution laws backwards......
what a coincidence...
