Like you, I had better things to do.

Are they still relevant? Absolutely. Very relevant to the participants.
The opening and closing ceremonies, maybe not so much.

I haven’t watched opening or closing ceremonies for many events.

Are the relevant, I reckon so......as I enjoy top level sport, I watch anytime I had a spare moment.

I thought that the Commonwealth Games were a sporting event.

Why are so many people getting their knickers in a knot over the opening and closing ceremonies?

    The sport was good.

The cost to stage such a poor show for the rest of the world has a lot to do with it and its the local population that will pay for it

It's original intention was that the athletes (remember them?) got to march in, in their country's uniform, and receive the adulation of the assembled spectators, both before and after the events. Ever since the LA Olympics, it's been a chance to show what sort of glitz (and kitsch) the host nation can provide.

Agreed. These ceremonies need more sporting content and less concert extravaganza, I think.

Agree massive screens replying moments (both winning and just good sportsmanship) athletes on the stage with short messages or reliving a memory, have athletes perform/be part of the show, ask athletes what they want, have bars and waiters serving drinks to the athletes, finish off with a massive music concert for all.

There doesn’t have to be a march in, each team can be lit up with lights and move to a vacant spot than the next team becomes the spotlight and move the where the previous team was this saves waiting for hours outside the stadium, gives them there moment in time

The event needs to be exciting for the athletes first and I’m sure the general public will follow and enjoy especially if there is maximum involvement of athletes.
