Some people do have a tendency to overload their vehicle - for it to have happened so regularly, in these cases it may have been the renting company's fault - not the users'. I bet that didn't stop the renter from blaming (and claiming from) the user though.

Not just applicable to Tritons. A bloke I know in Cairns bent his Hilux on a cape fishing trip. I think it could happen to any make of twin cab. I've seen a bent Defender somewhere, too.

Not sticking up for the Triton but that lot are fleet vehicles.

I seem to dimly recall this topic before, - didn't the crack occur at a similar location on the chassis wheel- arch ? Or was it through the weld for the damper top bracket ?

Wondering if two chassis-shaped reinforcing plates, welded on each side of the rail would stabilise it sufficiently...

Would make more sense to me if the added-on shell was Designed with it's own sub-chassis that mounted TO the host vehicle's frame and therefore spread the load better.

Trouble with welding plates to the chassis is that doing so would immediately void the factory warranty on the whole vehicle.
Where is the water tank(s) located? If they are behind the back axle, that extra weight and the pendulum effect of hitting some floodways at speed, could quite easily account for the damage.
You'd think that with that many sitting in a yard (presumably waiting for insurance assessment), someone would be taking a keen interest in the reasons?
