Dunno how I let myself get suckered into this thread, but,

*just walk away now
Yes, I did walk away... then I heard a little voice in my Left ear, whispering....
"If there are 27 very fat sheep, and 12 equally fat goats loaded onto a Chinese boat, - how old is the Captain ?"
This apparantly was a Grade 5 (Chinese school) maths problem, and there are TWO valid, accepted answers that I know of.
No wonder that China is doing so well in trade !!! !![]()
The official response:
In a statement, Shunqing Education Department confirmed there was no answer.
The role of education is not to produce standardised spare parts... Each answer can reflect a different personality. A question that can have different answers is a good question.
Darn !
Yep, (1) "Insufficient Information", and
(2) At least 28
(Being the minimum age a Chinese Captain could be, seeing that this boat would need to be of a certain size to carry the cargo, and since this displacement stipulates no less than 5 years experience, and the minimum age/smaller tonnage for any Captain is 23, therefore 23+5 = 28 and, for a savvy Chinese kid, it IS solvable.
and,
(3) As you doubtless know, originally a French Question, from around 40 years ago. - For the same reasons.... make the victims think .
The 'wrong' answers are about using the numbers to massage into 'something creative...'
Belt is running opposite the the stock's direction...
Here’s one:
‘If a man is always wrong. And a woman is always right.’
Then if a man tells a woman she is right, is he wrong?
