Pulled over by Police Woman - obstructed Rear View Mirror

    If only I wasn’t speeding......

Was pulled over for doing 60 in a 50 zone....copped it sweet although was told the speed limit was dropped recently.

    Female policewoman working solo......

As she was walking back to my car to confirm the fine she stopped and started taking photos of the back....I thought this was a little strange so decided to hop out just as she finished taking photos, she said was quick to advise she was wearing a recording device and pointed to it, thought this was strange as well but said yep that’s okay, as I walked to the back of the car she than advised I was being videoed by the camera in the police car....I said yep fine with me.

She than asked what I had on the rear windows, I said they were solar shades and explained the car was a camper van and the solar shades keep the heat out and provide privacy.

She said it’s an infringement to obstruct the internal rear view mirror. This got me interested, so I asked about every 4WD going on holidays or tradies.....she said holidays was fine as you unpack at the destination and it’s different for tradies. I said the shades were removable, only stuck on with suction caps. She said legal tint is fine but 100 blocked is illegal. I replied that I’m struggling to understand given the amount of cars with permanent obstructions, fridges, draw systems, cargo barriers with heaps of stuff hanging off them, tradie utes with canopies.

Anyways I started to removed them and said said oh they are removable, I said I explained this at start. She said seeing you’re removing them I will suspend the $280 fine however them infringement will stay Ken the system with photos and that if I’m pulled over in the future this incident will pop up and prompt the officer to check and if fitted I will be fined no 2nd chance.

Anyways I refitted internal rear view mirror (which police lady didn’t pick up on) and took off....a little flustered and running late for a MTB Ride I zoomed off up over the hill and bugger me dead the same police women had already turned around waiting for the next victim...I looked at speedo and was doing 60, looked at her and she was her waving her hand to slow down.

Umm I’m now wondering what the actual law is for the internal rear view mirror......hell I hardy look in the mirrors to start with.

Grrr, deal with the speeding fine when it arrives in the mail.

My 74 POS only has one on the driver's door, plus the internal one.

I've just assumed that was all that was required in 1974, it passed a R/W like that when I bought it.

Yep, 2000 Defender........I pointed out to the lady I had two other functioning mirrors.

I guess if I wasn’t speeding I wouldn’t be here highlighting the issue.

I am tempted to do a bit of research as she did say my car is now in the system.

Nope, didn’t want to push the limits, I had to be somewhere and I doubt it changes the decision on the side of the road.
