By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

With a liking for fast cars, I wonder how many of the "Suitors" didn't survive the mating ritual

In 1964 I drove from Brisbane to Roma in under four hours in my brother's Citroen. It is 325 miles. Virtually no traffic late at night, and once past Toowoomba stuck pretty close to 100mph. Fortunately it was late enough that there were no roos about, and the halogen headlights were pretty good. Roads were mostly pretty ordinary, but at least it was all sealed, even though it was only one lane of bitumen west of Dalby. Still, not bad for an eight seater with less than 70hp. (very slippery and very good brakes and suspension - and unlike many cars at the time a fuel tank big enough to do it non-stop)

    I've now got more sense!

Got clocked at 255 kmh in a HK Prem wagon dragging off my mates VC Brock commy maxed out at 225 kmh on the road from Narrogin to Williams one night. We both lost our licences for 9 months. Would have got away with it but the copper had a cadett with him. I knew the copper very well. The Prem wagon had a factory 307 and powerglide. Worked engine with a sprint car cam in it. Wasnt at full speed either. Bloody scary at that speed. Could watch fuel gauge dropping at that speed. Sheer stupidity but at that age i was invincible....so i thought

As a PS i held the record for the fastest time between Narrogin and Williams at the time as well. 9 minutes 46 seconds.

I hope it was may moons ago, as I made a similar mistake this weekend and decided to check the points on my licence, only to discover they last 3 (three) years in Qld, I thought they dropped off after a year!
