taking pets on spirit of tasmania

I'm going down to Tassie in early August and I'll be taking my 2 dogs with me( foxy & jack Russell).

To those who have taken pets with them, what is the procedure and are the cages reasonably comfy for them.

Rusty ( foxy) has arthritis in one hip and is painful in the cold mornings unless he has a blanket on him. 20150312_164737.jpg
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    TIA.

    Hi,
I believe there is a waiver/application form to allow pets to stay in the vehicle (caravan/motorhome) under some circumstances.
I have heard a lot of distressed dogs barking in the cages, but there may have been many not barking of course,
    Cheers

I'm taking our dog (Vizsla/lab cross puppy) on the Tassie ferry in a couple of weeks.
Apparently you get a token or something that grants access to the decks with the cages where you need to leave your pet. Need to supply your own bedding/blankets.
Can't imagine our dog will be too impressed with this arrangement, but at least we're on a night crossing so I plan on getting her knackered beforehand hoping that she may at least sleep through some of it!!

I'll let you know how it goes.

I wouldn't take a horse, pony, etc anything equine really, as they still haven't released a report into the following pony deaths. Tasmanian horse transporter calls on authorities to reveal what killed 16 ponies - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

We’ve taken our dog a few times. He’s used to it now. Loves all the smells on the boat. It’s not luxury travel for fido that’s for sure. But it’s not too bad. Cages are a decent size, clean, austere. They provide water. You take your dogs own bedding. Next time we may look at trying to leave him in the car, but if not, once he’s snuggled into his bed in the cage he looks pretty comfy. The dogs barking are primarily calling for their owners in the morning. They’re definitely happy to see you in the morning. 🙂 enjoy your trip!

I was concerned when I saw the cages Guiness was to travel in ( I was under the impression there was NO access to their level during the trip--) Austere is the right word.
but when he was presented to one of the cages for the return trip, he just walked straight in...
Your two should be fine together in the one cage

    Thanks for all the posts.

Pedro, I don't think they'll like be in the one cage together.

Except for Misty smelling Rusty's privates when he comes back from next door, they'll sleep in separate spaces.

Rusty on lounge, Misty in bed with me.

    cheers

Whenever I've been on a trip they just settle themselves in the beast whilst I drive. Never had a problem.
Was thinking about getting sleeping tablets for them, will decide when I get to the vet for the shots you have to get for them before I leave.
