Well thanks to all for the replies i am in the midst of stripping the gas wiring and all other manner of wires from the dash and engine bay; some one was very inventive with this poor old girl, it has a cruise control unit mounted on the fire wall in the engine bay all wires are cut. So it is going to be removed, the gas switch in the dash has wires to two solenoids on the gas Diffuser, one to allow pressure equalization on the vent side the other to allow gas flow, there is a third at the tank all parts are out of date so i will be removing the complete system. On that note i am now deciding whether to refit an original fuel tank and skip the gas or perhaps fit one of those Scuba tank systems so i can get the tanks up out of the road under the body and continue fitting two Series 1 styled fuel tanks. This is my preferred idea as i want as much fuel as i can get we intend to do Birdsville, Boulia and across to the centre late August in this vehicle. Lots to do in between time all brake system to be replaced as will the clutch hydraulic system, i want to get motor going soon so i can see what else it will need to be reliable. It has only covered a reported 43,000 klm's I plan on dropping sump and removing rocker covers first to see what it looks like and to allow washing of the rocker components top of cylinder heads through to underside of pistons and remove a couple of bearing caps to see what state they are in. Hopefully this will allow a reliable condition assessment prior to starting the engine for a first run up, i also intend to replace water pump and overhaul starter motor all oils, replace all wheel bearings and seals. So all in all i have a lot to do in a short time, thanks again for the replies.
P.S the vibration thingy has one wire but it goes nowhere so all good.

I fitted one of these to my 3.5litre V8 RR 1984
The breaker points went out of adjustment very quickly. The Lumenition uses an optical chopper in the distributor replacing the points and never needs adjustment
I always had the old points in the glovebox for backup, but never needed them and I had the RR for 20 years

1. if you want range, don't fit any gas. Any space that can fit a LPG tank will be better served with a custom made fuel tank that fills the space completely.
2. Don't bother with overhauling an original Lucas starter, you're better off fitting a Bosch starter off a D1 or similar.
3. After pulling the sump and resealing it, you can easily build up oil pressure by spinning the oil pump with a power drill. All you need is a shaft that mimics the end of the distributor minus the gear. Easy to make up out of a length of 1/2" rod and a little pipe collar.
Many years ago in a previous life i used to be workshop manager for a major American diesel engine manufacturer and when we rebuilt engines we used a 2 Gallon air receiver full of oil connected to the main oil gallery that we would pressurize with air at 40 psi until we saw oil at the rockers, we would then start the engine knowing we had sufficient oil in the system i will do the same with this engine i have a spare air receiver from my old P38 to do the trick and thanks for the information i really appreciate it.
