I mentioned back in April that I was moving to somewhere that would make it possible to donate blood again after a break of over a quarter of a century.
So much has changed since I gave blood in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Back then I used to turn up, give blood, have a cup of tea and a biscuit ,and then go home.
I have given blood twice in the last three months and I have been left with the feeling that the Red Cross really values my donation and that they believe I should know how much they appreciate my donation.
The email communication thanking me for making an appointment and the reminders as the appointment day approaches are probably not so different from the communication that my wife gets when she makes a hairdresser's appointment. However the follow-up thanks and the notification when my blood is on its way to a particular hospital adds to the feeling that I have done something worthwhile.
I suppose I had always assumed in the past that my blood would be put to good use, but now, thanks to the current way the Red Cross operates, I am left in no doubt that my donation is valuable.
