First time donating plasma today. Pretty cool machine whizzing and clicking away beside me.
Been donating whole blood for years, and will make plasma regular from now on too.
Not all visits go to plan.......
Centre was short staffed......close to an hour after appointment time till needle in.
Had my first needle miss the vein.......which meant changing chairs, other arm plus a change of nurse. They sorta indicated that I didn’t offer best arm which annoyed me a little as I alternate arms each visit.
Anyways under way and hopefully smooth sailing.
Not so smooth sailing for others, two plasma donation have been stopped, one had a return issue, the other guy is a 1st timer and his bed is fully laid down, feet above head, and they are monitoring his blood pressure and have cold compresses on his head and a nurse full time with him....one less nurse.
His girlfriend next to him, also first the plasma is just getting hooked up, no ideal......
Anyways while I’m typing the young fella is up I the sitting position looking a little unhappy. Girlfriend is looking happier now.....nurse is freed up although looks he needs to wait a little longer in the chair
Thought I give a real life rundown, don’t let this deter you, this is certainly not the norm. Every drop off 🩸 goes a long way..... and even the donors have a tough day in the chair.
The delays today means I’ll miss my next appointment, but that’s OK

Doing my bit again today
Nurse thought she detected a missed beat when checking my pulse…..a senior nurse come to double check. Got the all clear. Apparently it common for people to have a miss in the engine.
They were also offering travel neck warmer/blankets to plasma doners. I asked is it for National doner week or something life blood were running.
The lady got all teary 🥲 and said a family had just lost there daughter who received lots of plasma during her illness and wanted to give something back.
879mL into the bag today.
Locked down and pouring rain……checked the app and there was a slot available.
Figured it’d fill in the day
I see the questionnaire has changed…..meant I had to play attention just incase there was an extra yes question.
Doing clinical today, found out these go straight to a hospital to be used as whole plasma within a few days….well after it’s cleared
All Non clinical donations go the Melbourne to be split into a number of products than distributed
I also asked to be tested for suitability to donated platelets…….bigger time commitment, I’m sure work won’t mind.
have mentioned before…sometimes donations don’t go to plan…..
Finished my donation and walked out for a snack and a guy is being attended to, laying on the floor with legs on chair.
They just moved him to a bed.
Have no idea what the issue was but he was in good spirits and was saying this won’t deter him from continuing to donating.
The nurses were super professional……
A bit of trivia……apparently there is at least one donor that has donated at every center in AUS
a rough count on the app indicates 74 ish centers
A bit of an anti climax today……
After getting the extra vial last visit to see if I was suitable to donate Platelets….I assume I was good to go as the option appeared in the app…..so I booked my first platelets appointment and was kinda excited.
Arrived to be told my platelet count was two low
Donated plasma so nothing lost.
