My plasma donation the week before last went pear shaped - around 3/4 of the way through the machine shut down on a high pressure return and pushed some blood out around the needle so they had to stop. No idea what caused it but it did make a nice mess. I didn't notice unitl I felt something running down my arm and then the machine started beeping frantically.

The guy next to me looked worse off than I did though - he passed out at the end of his donation so was lying on the chair a bit woozy with a Doctor and Nurse tending to him.

As it didn't complete its cycle and I didn't get the saline at the end it's treated like whole blood donation and I can't donate anything for 3 months now.

Still, there was plenty there to use for someone so not wasted and I'll be back as soon as I'm able.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Back giving up a bit of plasma…….clinical today.

Interesting fact I learnt today…….only males are selected for clinical plasma and platelets (well there are a few ladies allowed to)

It’s to do with pregnancy either expecting or have been pregnant at some stage.

Yeah, we noticed female platelets were often a different colour (usually quite a bit darker) and were generally used only when no male platelets were available. We had to have HLA typing done to try and ensure that the right female platelets were requested, whereas they pretty much just take any male platelets.

Complex. I never really got a chance to have a hematologist explain it properly to me, I just got the second hand "doctors and nurses" explanation.

    It’s mind blowing.

I’m guessing the platelets were not clinical platelets…..hmm, she did give examples….

A simple question lead to a lengthy explanation which I wasn’t expecting and I probably zone out a bit.

Clinical platelets from the ladies has to have a test to confirm they have never been pregnant……years ago before the change they needed to ask the ladies if they have ever been pregnant, quite often the test would indicate they had been pregnant even though they said no…..and this is where the conversation would get awkward as they either didn’t know they were currently pregnant, lied or and I’m guessing here they might have had a miscarriage and not reposed. Apparently the test is always right.

And it was decided the Blood Life didn’t need to be having these conversation and it was decided as there is plenty of males donating plasma that all clinical order were easily filled.

Em at the strathpine centre today and learnt that a young girl that needs either a weekly or monthly plasma product to stay alive comes in on her birthday and hands out scratchies to donors……

She reckon it’s the best way to spend her birthday as she is 100% reliant on the liquid gift from donors.

I used to give blood in the 70's but had real probs with the needles at the time, some times I couldn't straighten my arm.
Started again about 7 years ago after a friends dying wish. Then after a few years had ankle surgery involving a minor bone graft & now have been "excommunicated" from being a donor after ticking the questionnaire box.
Very annoying, I would think the technology would be there to check if my blood or plasma is acceptable.

I think we are lucky in AUS that quotas mostly get filled each week…….seems just enough donors getting around. ATM it’s not so easy to get ones preferred time slot in brisbane.

    Doesn’t help your situation….
