Gunshot creek, a disaster waiting to happen?

Was there in 1980. Gunshot was certainly as named on the RACQ map of Cape York at the time.

As I remember it was one the more difficult creek crossing at the time and I have a recollection of having to winch some bloke out before I could cross on the return journey but it was nothing like as shown on the modern day videos.

The OP has voiced something that I have thought many times regarding that creek entry. A vehicle flipping forward into a channel of water too narrow to get the doors open could result in the deaths of everyone in the vehicle.

I’d be more concerned with this.
the insurance companies could void cover if they consider you willingly driving into that as deliberately risking (causing) damage.

In 30cm of water? It would have to be severe roof crush with no access to the back door. Youd be damn unlucky to die on gunshot, but I suppose its possible.

When I was up there, the high speed dirt road proved to be much more dangerous. Came across three roll overs in four days during the holiday period. On the OTT only passed one striken vehicle, flooded engine.

If there is a flip over on gunshot, Id like to see the video!

If someone dies, it might be time to put up a warning sign with flipped car graphic.

For some people gunshot Creek is one of the Main reasons why they head up to the Cape and to deny this to people wouldn't be fair to them.
I do agree that there is a very real chance of someone flipping over on their roof and drowning because they can't get out of the car So maybe the best thing to do would be to fill it in a bit so that the front wheels can get some grip so that the truck can't do a back flip and IF it gets too bad shut it down until it can be made safe again.

Would I put my 4WD through this?

Really! Trout, I understand what you're saying but I would have thought the effort of reaching the Northern most point of Oz would have been the reason. If I was wanting to get to the Cape I wouldn't be risking my rig doing that sort of "Look at Me" stuff.

I intend to spend a few months up in the cape next dry season and I will be giving gunshot a Wide berth.
I don't think it would do my D2a and my Trailcraft boat any good going through that.
My "Look at Me" moment will be Me holding up a big coral trout or similar fish, Not being nose down in some filthy water[thumbsupbig]
