There is a Suzuki 4WD club. I've seen their Vitaras out on tracks and they can go off road quite well (not rock hopping). I suggest they may be the best for your son - and the other members won't be deriding him for his choice of vehicle (as happened to me when I changed from a Land Cruiser to a Rangie whilst in the Toyota LC Club).

I have done the training with John and Julie (getabout 4wd training)...
And it was very good. The training was paid by land Rover as I purchased my defender new...
And I have been a member of a Sydney 4wd club for almost 5 years now.
Our 4wd training is comprehensive. Basic and advanced driving training. Plus basic and advanced recovery training.
Basic driving training done on the club land. Advanced training on sunny corners/Mt Arlie. You will get panel damage
The advanced recovery training is about how to use winch and winch extension straps to recover a rolled vehicle. This is also done at our club land.
There are plenty other 4wd clubs around offering training and trips.....
And also there are Facebook groups.........
I witness this when I was in the Toyota Land Cruiser club when a member when from a troopie to a D1.......he was the club first aid trainer and nearly left the club over the reaction of members.Quote:

In all seriousness though there are some great resources on youtube. I wont mention there channels but really a load of quality advice online.
I have learned a lot by watching youtube, be it 4x4 or welding or whatever i am researching to better my skills.

The main thing I'd say is don't go 4wd'ing up the bush by yourself. Especially if you can't describe where the hell you are so someone can come and rescue you. Remember the better setup you are ......... If you end up stuck. You will need someone with a bigger/better setup than you to recover you. Eg: if your somewhere you needed a "lifted and locked" 4wd to get to. Who the hell are you going to ring that can actually get to your location to help recover the car ?
