We DID have a comfortable upbringing, went to a good school and never went without. However, our parents instilled in us the importance of caring for others, whatever their situation or background or ethnicity. My father in his capacity as an eye surgeon and specialist was very passionate about indigenous health and was involved in the series of Trachoma and eye health programs in WA during the late 70s and early 80s. As a 13yo i accompanied him on 1 of these trips with Fred and Gabi Hollows and was my introduction to the stark realities of a 'lucky' country. I find it hard to fathom how much of an impact this had on me but it certainly helped forge the adult i became, i hope. Everywhere around us there are those doing it tough, who DON'T resort to crime, and others doing it easy up to their necks in stolen goods... we really need to start out treating ALL fellow humankind on an equal footing, even those who treat us in an abhorrent manner. Easier said than done, yes. I really have no other idea other than not to become a part of the problem.
