That certainly is the flip side for us retirees! But low interest rates should mean low inflation- but it sure doesn’t seem that way.
Mention the word "budget" and peoples eyeballs tend to roll to the back of their heads. For some reason every one seems to think a budget needs to be or is restrictive in spending, but thats no always the case. I prefer to call it a spending plan, as thats excatly what it is. Having a good budget certainly goes a long way to living within your means

Yes ago you would see quiz shows and people would sneeze at $10 k prizes, comments like it wouldn't even pay the credit card off.
Now people always want to go on a holiday instead of paying off debt with the money. For some it's once in debt means a life time of debt.
They need to be accountable for their choices and not whinge and say it''s every one else's fault.
I have a rellie who some years ago (about 12) decided to sell his very well regarded smash repair business. Wannabees queued up to buy it all with guaranteed bank loans approved for the price (in the millions) he wanted.
In the end he just auctioned everything (plant and machinery) off (buildings already sold) as he said "Between the insurance companies and the banks, those with big loans to pay off didn't have a chance".
Yes he could have flogged it off to the bloke with the biggest bank loan but he wouldn't do it. Man with a conscience.
Beware the banks, their only interest is their bottom line.
And many of our pollies have been bankers or aspire to be when they're chucked out of politics....

Spot on - SWMBO has asked why we don't go on overseas holidays like some of her friends - I told her to ask her friends where the money was coming from - yep, credit cards or redraw on the mortgage...
I'm trying to work out when we can do a tree change and be debt free - I think I'm about 2 years away. Then I can almost do what I like and not have to worry about supporting huge debt. No way I'll be in the city working for the man in a few years to pay for those sort of follys that SWMBO friends will have to. When we travel OS it will be with my own money.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
I get this all the time ... "I never want to do anytihng ... go anywhere .... go on holidays". I blame it mostly on facebook. If they have 100friends. Each month at least one person they know is going on some exiting "holiday/get away .... something" .... So it appears to them "everyone, everywhere is doing stuff except us.... Everyone else takes there car to a mechanic and gets it fixed properly"............. "everyone else calls a repair man/ plumber/ electrician/ plasterer /etc".
Oh you want it maintained.... OK, it needs a cambelt change, a full service kit and new pads and rotors .... Can I have $800 to by the bits" ...................................... Silence........................... "I can take it to a mechanics.... It'll be $3500". (my wife is actually really good with this stuff.... but it does **** you off no end when they complain that you never do stuff ).......... But the reason its never done is all the $20 and $30 amounts... add upto thousands if you decide to do them,
We are a single income family with 3 young children. EVERYTHING is done on a shoe string. She is talking about going on a cruise for her birthday next year with the kids ( Just work out what 5 passports alone is) ... and you'll get how insane that idea is.
We have no credit card debt, or car loans debts. If we did .... We simply could NEVER pay them off .... Not ever. If we can't buy something with our money, we don't buy it. Fortunately my wife is far better with money than I am, and budgets incredibly well.
I'm not saying we are doing it hard. Because we have "done nothing" as she says for the last 15years. We have actually managed to bring up our children without them being stuck in daycare everyday.... Because we purchased a house years ago .... Our repayments are far less than most poeples rent (infact, we couldn't afford the rent people pay, we would be going out backwards if we tried to rent).
I work with people that 15years ago also purchased houses at the same time as me. Even with two incomes, every few years they have needed to "re-finance" to pay off the credit card debts. Bottom line is, they now owe probably $400,000 on the house they paid $100,000 for 15 years ago.... And still keep piling everything they "must have today" onto credit cards. I fear we will be a generation that reaches retirement age owning 100% of the current values of our houses we purchased decades ago ( not 100% of the amount we paid for them ... 100% of the CURRENT MARKET VALUE
