Thread: CO2 shortage hits Britain

LOL! .... in this supposedly CO2 toxic atmosphere .. they have a shortage of CO2!

I thought they liked the beer flat and warm in England.
I will be flying to Scotland for 10 days next month where they like their beer bubbly and cold ....maybe I should take some with me to ensure my safety / use as a bargaining tool.
maybe I'll just have to drink whisky..... 1st world problems

I think you’re confusing real ale for lager. Lager, the stuff drank here, no matter what Aussies call it, is served fizzy and cold, even in England.
But I’m sure you know this and are just taking the ****.

I thought Lager and Ales were a sub group of beer, but yep , part **** take, was going to originally say uisge-beatha instead of whisky but most would have thought I'd fallen of the planet

Yes. Real ale is flat and bubble free and is pumped through the tap at cellar temperature which is probably cool rather than cold. It's hard to find in Australia because we find it utterly repugnant. Here in OZ we have Unreal Ale which is ale not Lager, has bubbles and is forced through the tap with CO2. We also have some very fine Lagers.

That is correct. The Real Ale Society are a very finicky mob who rival the Flat Earth Society for cherishing old notions which even rot has passed by.

I just started drinking an ale I brewed and bottled 2 weeks ago, only slightly carbonated and the perfect temp straight from my down stairs laundry. Pretty close to the ales I drank in my 3 years in the UK.

CO2 is not viable to produce from the atmosphere, at about 400ppm.
Interestingly apart from byproducts from chemical plants, CO2 is also obtained and refined from fermentation- ie brewing.

A mate of mine, a pom, loves his Ale, and there's a really good little brewery/pub in Canberra named The Bent Spoke.
They have a couple of hand pumped ales from the cellar, my mate Ian's favourite being Braddon Bitter.
In a Canberra winter the cellar temp is nearly as bloody cold as the chilled IPA's the rest of us were drinking and a long way below 15°

He's venturing north next week so we're going to visit Stone and Wood and Byron Bay Brewing co.

and getting back to the CO2 issue, the pubs and clubs that use pumps to push the beer from the keg to the Font use roughly half as much CO2 or cellar mix (a CO2/nitrogen mix) than those that rely on CO2 to carbonate and push the beer through.
