Yes, they moved there in 1948 according to the New Farm Historical Society. They moved from James St. The Valley. The building was empty for many years and we kids found ways to get in and play there. Prior to Sanitarium it was McNiven's Chocolates who moved to Barry Parade and Sanitarium then took the building over.

Not quite out in the boonies. It was only a block off the tramline. Old Brisbanites regarded any place past a tram terminus as out in the bush. The tramline was extended from Moorvale to Evans Rd. Salisbury during the war to get the workforce to and from the new factories in what was called "The Munitions Area." Evans Rd. may have been called Compo Road first.

My Dad had a builder mate who used to say he had trouble getting workers to work north of Chermside.

A bit off topic but I had a lot of dealings with Sanitarium when I was a Trade Commissioner.

Sanitarium and Kellogs were both started by The Kellogg brothers in Battle Creek Michigan, who opened a Sanitarium and fed the inmates Corn Flakes which they invented. They were Seventh Day Adventists.
As time went by one brother wanted to further commercialise the business so the company split into 2 - Kelloggs and Sanitarium.

When Sanitarium moved into Australia and NZ, Kelloggs actually paid for the equipment for the 2 factories in Melbourne and in NZ.

Many of the executives of Sanitarium were orphans who were later employed by the company as was their export manager when I dealt with the company.

They have a major market in South Korea as many of the population are Seventh Day Adventists and vegetarians.

The only jarring note I found when I visited MOJO with the export manager was that the "Aussie Kids " campaign is a direct steal of Weetabix UK campaign called "British Kids". Weetabix UK hates Sanitarium.

The are now established in Berkeley Vale on the Central Coast of NSW and even have their own radio station.( or had last time I stumbled onto it)

A bit off topic but I think a great story that about 90% of all the breakfast cereals in the World started in Battle Creek Michigan.

When I was a young bloke and we lived in New Farm, I regarded Chermside as the end of the earth and the southside ended at Woolloongabba. Past The Gabba there be dragons. When chatting up young maidens at parties and dances one took care to find out where they lived in case you had to drive them home. Most of the then new suburbs we regarded as too far for an apprentice petrol budget. Inala girls were said to be "geographically impossible". With urban sprawl most of these suburbs we regarded as out in the bush are now "sought after inner city property".

I remember as a kid, there being nothing but scrub, west of Scarborough Road. Now you'd be pushing it to find a couple of square yards, not covered in bitumen or concrete.

Hi All,
I can remember Shell putting out card albums as well around about the same time, fifties and sixties. I thought the weetbix factory was at Buranda, Wooloongabba area, in or just off Wellington Rd. I can remember the distinctive smell. Maybe that was Vita Brits.
