    Careful where you camp

Falling tree traps mates on buck'sweekend leaving them with 36 broken bones

Victorian buck'''s party campsite crushed by falling tree injuring mates

Three men have suffered serious injuries after being crushed bya tree while camping on a buck’s party weekend in Victoria.
Thegroup was camping at Big River northeast of Melbourne last Saturday when agumtree smashed through their campsite in the middle of the night, leaving atrail of destruction.
Aroundmidnight, the group heard a loud “crack” sound, but it was pitch black so noneof them could see the 30-metre ghost gum crashing to the ground through theircampsite, a GoFundMepage explained.

“Immediatelypanic set in, as they realised what had happened and they heard screams oftheir mates who had been injured,” the page read.

“A 30m ghost gum had uprooted and fallen across their camp. Itleft a path of destruction, seriously injuring three of our boys.”

The men desperately cut three of their mates, Clint Dent,Andrew Owen, and a third man who wishes to remain anonymous, free from underthe tree’s limbs.
“The shock set in as they witnessed their mates in agony, bleeding and bones protruding, they had no idea what injuries they hadsustained and had no reception to call for help,” the page read.

"a third man who wishes to remain anonymous" was supposed to be doing the weekend shift but chucked a sickie?

Anyway, joking aside, that looks like quite a nasty incident. I hope they recover soon!

Also, NEVER camp under a River Redgum. Or a Mountain Ash.

By the photo, I think these guys were just plain unlucky. They looked to be parked away from any chance of a branch falling, but weren't counting on the whole damn tree falling on them!

Was very conscious of this last weekend up at Wombat when I moved my van on Sunday afternoon up tot he top camping area - left it right in the middle of the campsite away from any of the trees as it had been blowing a gale during the weekend, and it hit hard again on Sunday night when the next front moved through. Had to stop on the way out of the campsite to drag a large branch off the track too.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

There are a wide variety of eucalypts that tend to be self pruning - and not just when it is windy.

Most mountain ash fall on still days, oddly enough. Usually weakened by rain. They are quite shallow rooted, given their size. I believe they are the tallest hardwood tree around. Here we call them widowmakers.

About eighteen months ago there was a (large) branch fell from a tree in a school yard in outer western Sydney on a calm day. It either killed or injured some students if my memory is right, and led to widespread removal of trees from school premises.

We had a customer that had a large tree b fall over onto her house up here and it landed in her bedroom whilst she slept, nearly killed her. She had on going nightmares about it for years.
