    Another Import from Ashcrofts thread...

Ok ok. Given my experience re importing an R380, I would really like solid advice here. I might finally be in a position to get a decent auto for the D2. Doing the sums makes me think that an Ashcroft one would be the best bet.

Thing is, in 2012 we were stung $905 AFTER the thing landed, via DHL. Sure, $160 0f that was GST (300 this time ), but I would really like to avoid the rest if at all possible. If it is going to cost me $4k ( Trans, heavy duty T/C and core charge plus the local charges ) maybe I should get one locally. Ashcroft stuff is so good, though, and I might get them to chuck something else in the box.

So, how do I get it here? On my old thread people suggested courier door to door. Which courier company?

As it's over $1000 then there's no way around it, as its the shippers responsibility to collect Australian customs duties and GST from you. This applies to all freight companies.

As I understand it, Customs duty on car parts is 5%. GST is then applied at 10% and most shippers will charge a fee as well, to cover their costs in getting the money from you and remitting to the the Government.

    Cheers

Thanks, Steve. I'm prepared to pay GST.

Here's what else I had to pay the last time, on a box that was $1565 including shipping:

    Customs Clearance $150
    Compile User $70.15
    Customs Duty $65.09
    Customs Processing Fee $55.20
    AQIS Lodgement Fee $25.00
    Quarantine Entry Fee $139.00
    DHL Fee $214.86
    Tax $24.52

    Sub Total $904.65

And, there was another $105.00 to pay before the item could be picked up. All in 2012. Tipping it won't have gone down....

That's what I was hoping to avoid this time.

    Ouch that’s rude!!

The duty and one of the processing fees would be fair but how did Quarantine get involved?

if it’s any help i’ve had 4 overseas deliveries by DHL this year and haven’t been hit with any additional charges. All were under the 1000 threshold. They’re not cheap but are quick and tracking is also pretty good.

    Cheers

Your guess is as good as mine, I have no idea. I'm still trying to figure out what compile user means. There was also an agent's fee involved. Can't remember what that was but it was north of $100.

In the end, the fees charged here were more than the cost of the actual gearbox. Which is superb, by the way.

One way to reduce the charges on the total amount is to pay the surcharge on a different invoice. You’ll need to speak direct with Ashcroft to arrange the payment.

You can also ask them to use a specific courier as some are known to bump up the fees without any reason other than to charge you more.

There was talk of the ‘courier company’ fees scam, where you are charged for things like AQISfees when in fact AQIS has no dealings with your package. Do a google search about it.

From memory , some of those fees can be avoided if you get an accompanying letter from Ashcroft saying that it has come direct from a machine type shop .
Basically means that it hasn't been contaminated by outside influences .
Also I kept in contact with DHL and did all the running around and organizing inspections etc .
Have a good talk to Aust customs and find out exactly what the process and requirements are before you start .

I gave up last time I was importing stuff and used a shipping agent to organise the whole thing. The agent charged me $150 I think to do it, but I only had to pay for Customs and GST (although I did pickup direct from the warf as I happened to have an MSIC card and a truck at the time, so you would usually have at least one more delivery fee to get to somewhere you can pick it up from).

And they got all the paperwork done in advance so it was a much quicker process than I had managed to do myself previously.

No MISIC card should be necessary, normally there is public access to pick-up from LCL facilities.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Those charges are all normal for shipping thru a forwarder, UK has some of the highest charges.
