What should I replace the Defender with?

Agreed. There was an aftermarket 7 seat conversion done in the UK by someone for the L322 but the D4 would be the way to go if you have the dollars IMO.

A Collingwood sticker. Then you can remember the defender loss.

Would stay away from anything with the 4.4 BMW petrol V8. They have a reputation for the engine self destructing on a regular basis even with full maintenance. Engine repair is often not possible as requires special BMW tools that they do not sell to public. There is a large step up in price from the BMW engine vehicles to the Jag motors for this reason.

The BMW M62 was probably a quite advanced motor for its time, but it’s dated from the 90s. Owners are generally satisfied with the L322 & x5 with this motor, until the VANOS cam timing needs replacing which is likely in a car of this age.

Are there some engines that are more or less reliable than others? I expect the cost of servicing and repairs will be more than the Fenda but is there much difference between the three options? How capable is the RR Sport offroad? I know they are built on a Disco platform but I imagine they have been lowered and are sitting on a different suspension setup?

Yeah like most here is recommend the latest D4 you can afford. We had to upgrade from a D2 for extra room last year and went the D3 V8 route due to budget. It's a 13year old vehicle but it still comfortable, quiet and refined.
