    Thanks for that bob 10, it brought back some good memories. Also interested in the historic concrete Pillbox from Dad's Army days in the background.

    It reminds me of Sandy McKinnon's Mirror Yacht trip down the Thames & points East, to Bulgaria. Well, sort of.

    As the winner of the Captain Cup at HMAS Rushcutter I only got to go fast.

    HMAS Watson XO was a gun I was focsal only seldom coxswain. Few mates have brought some cruising yachts. Looks a great life.

    As young apprentices we had no shore leave, but could go sailing for the weekend , sailing bosuns dingies and 27 ft. whalers from Rushcutter to Spectacle Island Balmain .[ pretty sure that was the island] Absolutely loved sailing the whalers, in a southerly blow. Every one had a go at the helm, in light winds the whalers were slow and heavy, anything around gale force they were excitement machines. Spectacle Island had accommodation, we were put into port & stbd watches, and allocated duties for the weekend, such as cleaning etc, but most of each day was sailing. Sailed over Friday , sailed back Sunday. Good times. A friend of mine was involved with the sailing at Rushcutter, many years ago. Name of Ian Hansen. Ian was a 15 year old Shipwright Apprentice, who became a World renown Marine artist. A quiet fellow, his skill at art was well known. What was not well known was he was an amateur boxing champ in his weight division. Any smartass who had ago at him about his artistic merit soon learned the error of their ways. Memories......

    If you like that story, get hold of a copy of the book 'The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow' Written by an Australian, A. J. MacKinnon, it's about a trip from North Shropshire to the black sea in a mirror dinghy. I'm reading it at present and it's a delightful and witty book.

    More on Ian. Not bad for a cheeky 15 year old Shipwright apprentice. One of his early paintings was of the Melbourne / Voyager collision. I believe the original hangs in the Fleet Commanders office.
