    Discovery TDV6 SE

Can anyone give me feedback on one of these beasts. I am thinking of buying one & am concerned with low tow hitch (for towing off road camper) & small fuel tank. Any work arounds like relocating spare wheel, putting in bigger tank & changing tow hitch?
What is dust sealing, "real" fuel economy (especially when towing), etc like?
If you have one, what galvanised your decision to buy?
    Any other comments appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Hi jdinow,
I've had a D3 SE TDV6 since July last year.
I have 2 Tow hitches, one for a small box trailer and one for my off road camper.
    Check this link for more:
    http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Foru...t=6923&start=15
The standard Land Rover hitch was about $167. The raised hitch from my local tow bar specialist was only $90. The Standard Land Rover hitch is OK for on road use, just a standard hieght that any family sedan may have. You need somethhing higher off road. Haven't had a problem with my raised hitch off road so far.

The Camper is about 1.5t when loaded. I am getting about 12.5L/100km on the hi-way. About 13.5/100km on tracks. I easily get a range of about 600km while towing. Around 900km on the hi-way when not towing.
Tank has about 83L usable. There aren't too many places where it is more than 600km between fuel stops. I am planning a trip to the Kimberleys via the Plenty Hwy and the Tanamai road in a few months, will only be using the standard fuel tank and have a jerry can or two just in case.

Dust seal is great. Double or triple seals everywhere. No dust gets in.

This is my 3rd Discovery. The best by far. You won't be sorry.

    Just my experience.

    Discomaniac.

I have just looked at that link.

You are right Peter, what were LR thinking about when they made up that hitch, it is ridiculous. There must have been a better alternative than hanging it down that low.

No car is perfect, but I reckon you can't go past the D3.

I do a lot of gravel road driving and have had no dust ingress whatsoever!

Sorry guys but I get a bit of dust in through the back tailgate seal. Not much but is a bit annoying. Apart from that the seals are great.

A mate of mine tows a T-Van with his D3 TDV6 and gets about 14lt/100km on the Highway.

Thanks Discomaniac, Jamo & Chris for the feedback. Seems you're pretty happy with them. I have a 2000 TD5 which I've had a few of the standard "issues" with, am just a bit cautious of LR quality control & some "design fault" issues. Hopefully the D3 is much better.

    Cheers,

Regarding the quality control i wouldnt be to concerned with all that. There have been reports of some easily sorted software glitches here and there but other than that there dont seem to be to many serious issues with the D3 that you wouldnt expect on the odd vehicle with any other brand. Ford have worked hard with the D3 to get the image Land Rover has devloped changed. I dont own one (maybe one day) but i am sure the guys on here would fill you in on any problems, if any. In the end the D3 is a top bit of kit, dont let the fear of some warranty troubles stop you, thats what warranty is for.

Ford seems to have put the cleaners through Jag in terms of build quality and they now regularly top the reliability and build quality surveys.

I would expect they will do the same with LR, all the signs are that the 'old' ways of British build are behind LR (except of course with the Defender).

Reassuringly, the major components for the D3/RRS are sourced from external suppliers (Ford/PSA for the engines, ZF for gear & transfer boxes and GKN for driveline) and LR are responsible for the fundamental design and engineering (which is what they are best at).

Robots do the assembly and fortunately do not suffer from Mondayitis or get upset about Birmingham being beaten in the footy on the weekend.

I think LR must still make the air compressor judging by the number of iterations they have had with them - Rev No 4 I think they are up to
