Similarly a "milk bar" is not a place with a bar to drink milk, but the old "corner shop" (a.k.a. "mom & pop shop"), cafe or even delicatessen.

I’ve never seen hot bread for sale.....always cold bread.
Try going to a small bakery where they still do the bread in shop. Our local one at Thompson Parkway shops does the bread in shop and it is sold still quite warm. This is where we got the term hot bread shop from as the bakery at South Belgrave also does there own bread.

In Mornington, we used to have a Milk Bar that you could sit at a table and drink your milk shakes or whatever,,, not exactly a "bar",, but does that count?

I'm guessing it was in the days before "Cafe's" were fashionable.

Nor is a milk bar a place where cows are confined by a bar while being milked.

Still a common term here...have one called Deakin Hot Bread and you can see the bread being prepared and cooked
etc as they open about 5.30-6 am when the bakers are still working.
Many years go in Mildura we had a Hot Bread Shop called "Devil's Kitchen" and their bread, pies, and pasties etc were good tucker.

    Cheers, Mick.

Anyone that has been through Gin Gin. (Qld) may have seen or stopped at " Hot Bread Fred's ". Baked in the shop and still warm if you get there early enough.
500 MTS down the road is Gin Gin Bakery. Same setup, both yummy.
