    Arc Welding UV Radiation

Thought I'd post this up considering summers coming and we all love to wear shorts.
I've been doing some welding at work lately, I'm a carpenter by trade and normally just weld at home. Boss asked me to do some welding, he brought along a welder one of our family members no dramas. Normally at home im wearing pants all the time anyway, and generally dont weld for long periods at a time. Not thinking a great a deal about it put the usual mask on, I don't wear gloves normally so I didn't wear them. And began to weld for most of the day, squating over the work overall 6 hours ish. Now I've been burnt before from welding UV rays, but this time I copped it. Still could be way worse if I was welding ALL day but still enough to **** me.
So just a friendly reminder as much as the shorts temptation is in the hot weather, if you need to weld don't forget to cover yourself up. I completely overlooked it today thinking keeping myself cool was the better option, and now I'm wearing it for next 4 days...
    Happy Halloween!
    Cheers Jim

You just wanted to post pictures of your pins

I've made the same mistake (to a lesser extent, arms only) and have learned from the experience. And weld flash is like having sand in your eyes. Very unpleasant. Take care out there.

P.S. Pure aloe vera works a treat on UV burns like that. Lather it on...

I wore a T-Shirt once whilst mig welding, (I should have been outside gardening),, that was fun,,, not. Had to fill in for a ****** who decided to take the day off work,, it was my turn for the day off the next day. My chest was dark crimson red.

I was made aware of this 55 years ago when the mechanic on the field party I was working on did a lot of welding on a day when it was "too hot to wear a shirt".

This was the same man that: had an issue while oxy cutting wearing sandals - an offcut of red hot steel fell between two toes, and in the following excitement it took him about thirty seconds to get the sandal off and his foot in a bucket of water!

Yeah, nowhere near enough PPE. TBH, you and the boss should have known better.

A customer of mine was telling me how he had done a similar job, stick welding a few odd jobs while wearing footy shorts.
Arc rays to the old ball bag and inner thigh. The 2 boys swelled up like mangos apparently. Great party trick, but I wouldn't like to try it.

Years ago, a (non welding trade) apprentice in the hunter valley was thrown an old manual welding helmet, given a pack of rods and told to get welding. He welded all day with the helmet on clear... now blind.

Beside the arc and obvious heat, another welding hazard not to be taken lightly is the fume. Considerable quantities of metal vapor containing all the lovely carcinogenic and bio-accumulating heavy metals such as chromium, cadmium, manganese, vanadium are present. So wear a mask under your welding mask.

TL;DR: Welding is dangerous, can kill / maim, be careful.

Like I said I know better accidents happen, 4 days off work flu for 2 weeks and a broken nose since Monday night. Stepping out of my usual daily trade, wearing shorts not thinking I was gonna be welding. Like I said i always wear pants at home so never had the issue before.
Healing fine though, inner legs a bit sore but that never sees the sun so it dosnt take much to burn it.
Just a friendly reminder easy to overlook in the hot weatherArc Welding UV Radiation

And that's just ****ing ridiculous, you hear story's like that all the time about apprentices. I hear things like apprentices running their hands over electric planes to test if the blades are out.
I like to think they are full of ****, but if you believe them you won't make the same mistake.

And if you are helping a mate with a welding job in a nice new galvanized garage don't be fooled by looking the other way is ok. 2.am in the morning and you wonder how the hell you got sand in your eyes.
