It is my understanding that Whisky can only spelt that way if it comes from Scotland. All other types are to be spelt as Whiskey. I note that some non scotch whisky pictures on this post are being spelt with no "e" but as time goes on the labels will change. Much like Shiraz, Champagne etc. being region specific not the type of grape grown.

Yes we live in a very expensive country with a very high standard of living. Most products and services are highly taxed here. Alcohol tax is particularly high, yet the cash-back equalisation scheme for wine makers is very generous too.
10% of course is also GST all the way up the chain on the product and the freight etc.
The majority are obviously happy paying high prices. If people stopped paying the asking price, prices would come down.
Hmmmm...... Whisky.![]()
Cheers, Billy.
Keeping it simple is complicated.
Interesting that a large number of Whisky distillers age their Whisky in used Whiskey barrels...vis Jack Daniels

Distillery tours are really interesting and as Weeds said you learn a lot , and a lot of distilleries have some good history as well.
For the south Queenslanders or anyone touring in the area the Beenleigh Rum Distillery is recommended , educationally , historically and yummily. take the tour with tastings . If you think you don't like Beenleigh Rum , I'm sure after the tastings you will walk out with a bottle.
