I used to always have it neat, till I visited Glenmorangie and caught the distiller on a good day. He told me to always taste neat first, then add a couple of drops of water and try again. I’m always floored at the difference a couple of drops makes.

Actually, they asked me how I’d found the various distillery tours and I pointed out they were all crap (quick march around, dram of cheap product and there’s the shop) and “you scots need to visit a Western Australian winery to learn how a real tour is done”. I musta touched a nerve because the young lassie took off and came back with the boss to “give us a real tour”. Sometimes it pays to be honest!

    !
Think I might have mention something similar in his thread

I’ve been to two tasting the the guys running the rafting encouraged every Indy to try neat and than with dash of water.

I do this with everybody bottle I’ve receive to experience the different tastes and to decide which way forward.

In my short journey I’ve found for me that cask strength will need a drop or two of water…..as any whiskey that isn’t cast strength has already been watered down.

On our recent jaunt to Albany my wife insisted we stop in at Limeburners. I didn’t show much enthusiasm and she pushed me until I stopped (turns out she wanted to try their Gin). Some whisky just isn’t to my taste. It might win heaps of awards but I just don’t enjoy drinking it.

    Taste is a funny thing.
