A blind man I saw

My opthamologist told me I would be legally blind if not for my cornea graft and implant in one eye and RK contact lens in the other, unaided my kerataconus vision is 20/200 . No taking vision for granted here.

Strange thing with my contact out I have perfect macro vision in one of my eyes, focus about 25mm from the front of eye, depth of field is about 2mm so I can use a phone in front of my face to 'see' with through its camera.

Had to give motorbikes up due to the odd lens drying up and falling out. Still don't need a white stick to drive but might need that Autonomous EV one day.

That driver should get one of those "Caution: Blind man driving" stickers you often see on Venetian blind installer's cars.

He repaired a flat tyre for me and I was amazed at his dexterity. All the required tools were in a corner of the shed on the wall and he knew where everything was.

I think he's now passed away.

Some of you here may have filled up at the Windorah roadhouse which was for many years manned by an old blind guy, whose name I unfortunately forget . He would sit at the counter and hold money and cards very close to his eyes.

He could walk back into the shop and get things off the shelf that customers asked for.

He was pretty astute and last time I went through , new people had taken over, but the old guy came out and said g'day even though he couldnt see me.

Btw, Windorah is 380 odd km east of Birdsville. I always stop for fuel top up and my self imposed 2 hr stop. If you haven"t been to Birdsville and are going via the Birdsville Developmental Road ,or coming back that way , I would suggest you allow yourself a couple of extra hours as there are things on the way to stop look and photograph.

One of my sisters close friends has a degenerative eye condition and slowly went blind over a number of years with no known cure. She learnt how to use a stick and other aids before she totally lost vision. She is now totally blind. Could be the case with this person, absolutely horrible thing to have happen.

I remember years ago seeing something similar when a blind person was in a shop next to me and got given his change , I watched him put the notes and coins very close to his face and count the change received.

Either way , just be thankfull you have your sight , its a very precious thing that many take for granted.

One of my brothers is legally blind - no vision in one eye at all and about 40% or less in the other - doesn't use a cane but you don't have to be totally blind to be legally blind. Bit surprised that people don't know that.

I also knew a guy at uni who was albino and therefore had no pigment in his eyes, which you need to see properly. He was doing a PhD but had to read everything on a special screen and needed the magnification so high he couldn't get a complete word on his computer screen. He held things up to his face too.

And my wife's eyesight is pretty bad and she holds her phone up against her nose to read the screen, and that's after I increased the font size.
